Jacqueline Jossa: 'I wanted to do binge plot justice'

EastEnders star Jacqueline Jossa has revealed she did lots of research into teenage drinking because she wanted to do the subject justice.

The 20-year-old, who plays binge-drinker Lauren Branning on the BBC One soap, watched documentaries and consulted charities such as the British Liver Trust to ensure that her portrayal was accurate.

"When I was first told about Lauren's storyline, I was really excited - but also wanted to do it justice as it is an important issue that many people face. I really didn't want to let anyone down," Jacqueline told EastEnders' official website.

"Although filming was at times difficult, as an actress, it was a great experience. It was quite sad to have to take the character so low, as you really feel for Lauren. Portraying Lauren drunk was hard because every person acts differently when they've been drinking. I had to decide how she would act, and how that would change at different stages," she explained.

Andrew Langford from the British Liver Trust, who was brought in as a consultant, praised EastEnders' writers for their in-depth research and accuracy with the storyline. "It has been amazing just how professional everyone at EastEnders has been - the desire for accuracy has been outstanding from everyone," he said.

He also complimented Jacqueline and Jo Joyner, who plays her screen mother Tanya, with their performances, and hopes the plot will raise awareness of underage drinking.

"Any concerns were allayed once I'd read the draft scripts. There is nothing to glorify about teenage alcoholism or any liver disease," he said. "Having this storyline on a major British soap allows us to get a message across to millions - I hope teenagers themselves take notice and reflect on their own drinking habits."

EastEnders' Max Branning is left broken-hearted when Tanya Cross waves farewell to Walford.

After finding out that wife Kirsty  had lied to him about being pregnant, the car salesman is forced to bid a tearful goodbye to his ex-wife Tanya.

"Max realises Tanya, the one real love of his life, is leaving Walford and isn't going to change her mind. Tanya is determined to do the right thing for the sake of her children but will Max be able to keep the rest of his family together or will they decide to go along with Tanya?" a spokesman for the BBC One soap said.

"As they say a tearful farewell to each other, the love between them is evident and it will never go away..." they added.

Tanya's farewell episode will be shown on June 28.

Jo has revealed she is leaving the soap, so she can spend more time with her family.

"We were renting a place that was only 15 minutes from the studio, but even then I could go three whole days without seeing my children. In years to come I wouldn't be going, 'Ooh great I've got lots more money in the bank,' I'd be saying, 'Wow, where did my children go?'" she told TV Times.

The actress admitted she would miss her screen husband the most: "Jake's a wonderful actor and I've been incredibly lucky to play opposite him. When you have a chemistry like that, it's effortless."

EastEnders is set to show dramatic car crash scenes that leave Phil Mitchell in a coma and bring mum Peggy back to the Square.

The BBC soap has apparently gone all out on the stunt by hiring a helicopter to add to the drama and capture the action, said The Sun.

Walford bad boy Phil, played by Steve McFadden, is set to be thrown through a windscreen during a crash with a lorry while on his way to a dodgy deal with new character Carl White.

He is desperate to get some cash and agrees to a deal Carl will only tell him the details of on the way there - but things get even worse when Carl starts driving dangerously.

Both men are left unconscious by the smash, but Phil is in a coma which prompts the return of Peggy as she takes up a vigil at his bedside.

The helicopter has been drafted in as an air ambulance, but EastEnders will be getting its money's worth by also filming bird's eye views of the carnage.

A source told The Sun: "This is going to be the most dramatic and the most expensive stunt in EastEnders' history. No expense has been spared and show bosses are determined to make sure it is the most talked about TV moment of the year.

"Carl gets distracted from the road and swerves into the path of a lorry, resulting in a huge smash. Phil flies through the windscreen on to the road, leaving him with terrible injuries. A rescue helicopter airlifts him to hospital, filming all the while. He ends up in a coma, on life support, fighting for his life. Peggy then comes back to see Phil in hospital for a one-off special appearance."

The crash scenes, said to have cost £1 million, will be shown this autumn.

EastEnders bosses have officially announced that Michael French will return to his role as David Wicks later this year.

The popular character was last seen in January 2012, when he returned to Albert Square to see his mum, Pat, before she died of cancer. While back home, David reignited his romance with former flame, Carol, with whom he has a daughter, Bianca. But Carol was left angry and broken-hearted when David fled Walford alone on the night they were due to leave together. So how will Carol react when David finally shows his face again?

"It's an absolute honour to have Michael back in the show," says Lorraine Newman, Executive Producer of EastEnders. "Michael created an iconic character in David and with such rich history with Ian, Bianca and of course, Carol, there's plenty to explore in the future."

Michael starts filming his first scenes this summer and will appear on screen this autumn.

Since originally leaving EastEnders in 1996, Michael has played medic Nick Jordan in both Casualty and Holby City. He also starred in BBC1's rural drama, Born and Bred, and on stage in West End musical Chicago, in the role of Billy Flynn.

Newman, who joined EastEnders as a script secretary at the age of 19 and has held every editorial role on the show, said: "I have loved every moment of my time at EastEnders but it is finally time to leave Walford."

She continued: "Over the past 23 years I have been involved in some of the best moments on British television, from 'Who Shot Phil?', to 'You Ain't My Mother!', to the 25th Live Anniversary episode and in the past year, the Olympic Torch episode has also been a proud highlight."

Newman added: "Over the past year, I have also had the pleasure of planning and implementing the revival of many of the EastEnders clans who should always be at the heart of the show.

"I am confident that I am leaving the show in a stronger place and am sure that Dominic will continue to build upon this, taking the show to a new level."

She concluded: "I am delighted to be joining BBC Drama Production as an Executive Producer and look forward to the new opportunities and projects this will bring."

Treadwell-Collins is returning to EastEnders after a three-year absence, during which he worked as Head of Development at production company Lovely Day.

He said: "You never really leave EastEnders - and for the past three years, the characters have all stubbornly stayed in my head. I'm sad to be leaving Lovely Day, especially at such a fertile time for the company - but am excited about the challenge of taking the helm of Britain's greatest drama.

"It is an honour to follow someone as talented and experienced as Lorraine and I'm looking forward to building on her work and taking this iconic and essential show into 2014 and beyond, as we look to EastEnders' 30th anniversary in 2015."

Himesh wants Tamwar to try stand-up again

EastEnders star Himesh Patel has said he'd love his character Tamwar Masood to try stand-up comedy again - and would even have a go in real life.

Himesh plays market inspector Tamwar, who has become a comedy favourite with viewers and recently launched an online spin-off, Tamwar Tales, to give a witty insight into his work in the Square.

Talking about the character, who tried stand-up comedy while still at school, he said: "I'd like to maybe see him try stand-up comedy again because the last time he tried it was five years ago and he's got five years' worth of material from the various things that have happened. But I don't know whether that's an option, it's a discussion that needs to be had."

Himesh also said he'd like to have a go at being a real-life comedian: "I think I would [enjoy it]. I've never tried it myself but I have had discussions with friends about pursuing it, not as a main endeavour because I love acting and writing too much, but it's nice to try something new, isn't it, so it's on the list I think."

On how he'd come up with Tamwar's humour, Himesh said: "The dry sense of humour was something that came at the beginning which I didn't realise I was doing and it's all credit to the writers that they picked that up and decided to make that a facet of the character. I've just been very fortunate that we've been able to create this unique character that I love playing and the writers seem to enjoy writing for him."
